billing and cooing (billboard) (2010)

Installation for the external billboard at Trocadero Art Space, corner of Hopkins and Leeds Streets, Footscray, Melbourne, AU. June and July 2010

There was no audio component with this vinyl banner apart from the sounding of these phonetic words by viewers. either silently or otherwise. 'Oom' is commonly used in field guides as the word to describe pigeon song, and this image describes a slightly faltering pigeon's song. The background colours are taken from the colours on racing pigeon rings - each colour denotes a racing year. The neutral grey of the lettering is altered by these colours, just like a quick exercise in colour theory. This banner was up for 6 weeks at the same time as the Pigeon Post exhibition in central Melbourne at Mailbox 141. Both installations used the word 'oom', like a kind of pigeon chorus across the city.
